Bradford Council Tax Bailiffs: The Four Firms, and What Happens Next
A summons adds £100 to a Bradford council tax debt, so making contact before the hearing is worth more here than in most districts. Four firms may then collect: CDER Group, Jacobs, Newlyn and Marston. Bradford also runs a Hardship Scheme beyond the standard discount.

What happens if you don't pay Bradford council tax
Bradford sets out a longer warning sequence than many councils before court action begins. A first reminder gives you seven days to catch up, and if the account slips again a second reminder follows, then a final notice, each with its own seven-day window. Only once those have passed does Bradford apply for a summons and then a liability order. What an enforcement agent may do after that, and the national fee stages that apply, are covered in our council tax bailiffs guide rather than set out again here.
The four firms Bradford uses for council tax
Bradford lists the enforcement companies it instructs, and there are four: CDER Group, Jacobs, Newlyn and Marston. The council does not say which accounts are sent to which firm, so any of the four could be the name on your letter. Our profiles for CDER Group, Jacobs, Newlyn and Marston explain what the firm handling your case is and is not allowed to do.
What a Bradford summons adds to your bill
Bradford states that a summons adds £100 in costs to what you owe, charged once the case reaches the magistrates. Because that sum attaches at the summons stage, getting in touch before the hearing date, and agreeing how to clear the arrears, can keep the extra cost down and may stop the case going further. Paying the original balance on its own, after a summons has issued, does not usually remove the added costs.
How to pay Bradford, and its hardship scheme
Bradford's council tax team can be reached on 01274 437792 to discuss a payment arrangement or a change in your circumstances. For residents on a low income, its Council Tax Reduction scheme lowers the bill, and a separate Council Tax Reduction Hardship Scheme can help further where that is not enough, though the hardship fund is cash-limited and awards are not guaranteed. If your case has already reached one of the four firms, an arrangement made with Bradford does not by itself stop the agent, so it usually helps to tell both.
Complaints about Bradford, and help if you're struggling
Bradford runs a two-stage complaints process. At stage one it acknowledges within 5 working days and aims to reply within 10, and at stage two it again acknowledges within 5 working days and aims to reply within 20. The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman can look at the matter once that route is complete. A complaint about how one of the firms behaved, rather than Bradford's decision to refer, can instead go to the Enforcement Conduct Board, the body that oversees private enforcement.
Frequently asked questions
Which firm does Bradford use for council tax?
Bradford names four enforcement companies on its own website: CDER Group, Jacobs, Newlyn and Marston. It does not say which accounts go to which firm, so check the name printed on your own letter against those four rather than assuming a single company.
How much does a Bradford council tax summons cost?
Bradford's own page states that a summons adds £100 in costs. Paying only the original arrears after a summons has been issued does not usually clear those added costs, so it is worth contacting the council before the hearing.
