Bristol Council Tax Bailiffs: The Two Firms, and What Happens Next

Bristol names both of its firms itself: Marston Recovery and Bristow and Sutor. Court costs are itemised and capped at £69.50, being £52 on the summons and £17.50 if a liability order is made, so paying before the hearing keeps the second charge off your account.

What happens if you don't pay Bristol council tax

Bristol sets out its own missed-payment sequence well before any agent is involved. A reminder gives you seven days to bring the account up to date, and if that is missed without contact, the right to pay in instalments is usually withdrawn and the whole year's balance falls due. Bristol allows at most two reminders in a year, so a third missed payment brings a final notice rather than another chance. Only after that does the council ask the magistrates for a liability order. The entry rules and fee stages that apply once an enforcement agent holds a case are covered in our council tax bailiffs guide, so this page does not restate them.

The two firms Bristol names for council tax

Unlike many authorities, Bristol lists its enforcement agents openly on its own recovery page. Two companies appear for unpaid council tax, Marston Recovery and Bristow and Sutor, each shown with a payment line of its own. Bristol publishes no rule for which account goes to which firm, so either can be the one that writes to you, and the safest check is the name on your letter. Our profiles for Marston and Bristow and Sutor set out what each firm may and may not do once it holds your case.

What Bristol adds in court costs

Bristol is unusually specific about its own court costs, which many councils leave vague. Its page states that costs of up to £69.50 can be added: £52 falls due when the summons is issued, and a further £17.50 applies only where the debt is still unpaid at the hearing and a liability order is granted. Clearing the balance before the hearing can therefore save part of that charge, so it is worth dealing with a summons quickly.

How to pay Bristol directly

Bristol runs an online council tax account for payments and arrangements, and its team can be reached on 0117 922 2900 if you are struggling. The council separates a standard payment arrangement, offered before a summons, from a special payment arrangement once a summons has been issued, so the stage your case has reached often shapes what you can ask for. If your account has already moved to Marston or Bristow and Sutor, an arrangement agreed with Bristol does not automatically stop the firm's own action, so it usually helps to tell both.

Complaints about Bristol, and help if you're struggling

Complaints about how Bristol handled your case go through the council's own complaints and feedback route, by online form or email, and the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman can review the matter once that process has finished. A complaint about a firm's conduct on the doorstep, rather than Bristol's decision to refer, can instead go to the Enforcement Conduct Board, which oversees the private enforcement industry. Where money is short, Bristol's own Council Tax Reduction scheme can lower the bill for residents on a low income, and the council can point you toward free debt advice.

Frequently asked questions

Which firm does Bristol use for council tax?

Bristol names two enforcement agents on its own website, Marston Recovery and Bristow and Sutor. The council does not say which accounts go to which firm, so either may contact you, and the reliable check is the name printed on your own letter rather than an assumption.

How much can Bristol add in court costs for council tax?

Bristol's own page states up to £69.50: £52 when the summons is issued, and a further £17.50 only if a liability order is made because the debt was not cleared before the hearing. Paying in full before the hearing can avoid that second amount.
