Hounslow Council Tax Bailiffs: Who Collects, and What Happens Next

Hounslow names no enforcement agents on its own pages, so your letter is the only reliable record of who holds the debt. What the council does publish: £91 in summons costs, £25 more on a liability order, and a hardship fund applied for through Citizens Advice Hounslow.

What happens if you don't pay Hounslow council tax

Hounslow starts with a reminder giving seven days to pay or agree an arrangement. If payments slip again a second reminder follows, and after that a final notice, which removes the right to pay by instalments so the full year's balance falls due. If it is still unpaid, Hounslow applies to the magistrates for a liability order, the point from which an enforcement agent, deductions from wages or benefits, or the other post-order powers become available. What an agent may then do, and the national fee stages, are set out in our council tax bailiffs guide rather than here.

Which firm collects for Hounslow

Unlike some London boroughs, Hounslow does not publish the name of the enforcement firm it uses on its council tax pages, so we will not guess at one. If your account reaches enforcement, the firm's name and contact details will be printed on the letter you receive, and that is the reliable guide. It is worth matching that name against our company profiles to understand what the particular firm can and cannot do, rather than assuming it is the same company a neighbouring borough uses.

What a Hounslow summons and liability order cost

Hounslow is open about the court costs it adds. Its page states that a summons adds £91, and a liability order a further £25, so up to £116 in costs can sit on top of the tax once both stages are reached. Because the larger charge attaches at the summons stage, calling Hounslow as soon as a reminder arrives, rather than waiting for the court date, is usually the cheaper course and can keep the case away from an agent altogether.

The hardship fund, applied for through Citizens Advice

Hounslow runs a Council Tax Support Hardship Fund with an unusual condition: you cannot apply to the council directly. Instead you approach Citizens Advice Hounslow, or a similar organisation, which reviews your finances and gives you a supporting letter without which the council will not process the claim. The fund is aimed at arrears caused by changes to the 2025-26 Council Tax Support scheme, and decisions are made within 10 working days. Alongside it, Council Tax Reduction lowers the bill for low-income households, and a section 13A discretionary reduction can help in exceptional hardship.

Complaints about Hounslow, and help if you're struggling

General council tax enquiries go to cscenquiries@hounslow.gov.uk, and a complaint about how the council handled your case follows Hounslow's own complaints procedure, with the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman available once that is exhausted. A complaint about the conduct of whichever firm is enforcing, rather than the council's decision to refer, can instead go to that firm and to the Enforcement Conduct Board, which oversees private enforcement. Getting advice early, through the same route as the hardship fund, often opens more options at once.

Frequently asked questions

Which bailiff firm does Hounslow use for council tax?

Hounslow does not name the enforcement firm or firms it instructs on its own website, so there is no company for us to identify in advance. If a case reaches enforcement, the name and contact details will be on the letter you receive; check those against our company profiles rather than assuming a particular firm.

How do I apply to Hounslow's Council Tax Support Hardship Fund?

You cannot apply directly. Hounslow requires you to go through Citizens Advice Hounslow, or a similar organisation, which reviews your income and outgoings and provides a supporting letter. The fund is aimed at arrears caused by changes to the 2025-26 Council Tax Support scheme, and decisions are made within 10 working days.
