What happens if you don't pay Newcastle council tax

Newcastle works through the national recovery route before any agent is involved: a reminder, then, if payments keep slipping, the loss of the right to pay by instalments so the full year's balance is due, then a summons to Newcastle Magistrates' Court and a liability order. The council asks for the balance and costs to be cleared before the hearing to stop the case going further. Once a liability order exists, what an agent may do and the national fee stages that follow are set out in our council tax bailiffs guide instead of here.

Who collects for Newcastle: an in-house team and two firms

Newcastle is unusual in running much of its enforcement itself. Its pages name an in-house Compliance and Enforcement Team, reachable on 0191 277 4770, alongside two outside companies: Jacobs Enforcement on 0345 601 2692 and CDER Group on 0330 460 5295. Because any of the three could hold your account, the name and number printed on your letter are what tell you which. Our profiles for Jacobs and CDER Group cover the two external firms; where Newcastle's own team is handling the case, you deal with the council directly.

What a Newcastle summons and liability order cost

Newcastle publishes the court costs it adds, which is worth knowing before a summons lands. Its page states £63 is added when the summons is issued, and a further £53 if the magistrates grant a liability order, so up to £116 can be added once both stages pass. Unlike some councils, Newcastle keeps its enforcement fee figures current, showing the scale in force since May 2026 as well as the older one, so the amounts it quotes can be relied on.

How to pay Newcastle, and telling them you're vulnerable

Newcastle's council tax team can be reached on 0191 278 7878 to set up an arrangement or report a change in circumstances, and payment can be made through the online account at any hour. The council's pages ask anyone in a vulnerable situation to tell the enforcement agent straight away, and note the agent may ask you to confirm the vulnerability so the right help can be put in place. Flagging it early, with any evidence, gives the fairest chance of the case being handled sensitively, though it does not automatically pause enforcement.

Complaints about Newcastle, and help if you're struggling

Where the in-house team is involved, a complaint about how the case was handled follows Newcastle's own complaints procedure, and can then go to the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman. Where Jacobs or CDER Group is acting, a complaint about the agent's conduct, rather than the council's decision to refer, can go to the firm first and then to the Enforcement Conduct Board, which oversees private enforcement. Newcastle's Council Tax Support scheme can lower the bill for residents on a low income, so it is worth checking before a case reaches court.

Newcastle uses a mix its own pages set out: an in-house Compliance and Enforcement Team on 0191 277 4770, alongside two outside firms, Jacobs Enforcement and CDER Group. The name and number on your own letter tell you which of the three is handling your account.

How much does Newcastle add in council tax court costs?
