What happens if you don't pay Sandwell council tax
Sandwell sends a reminder or a final notice when an instalment is missed, and gives seven days to put the account right. Miss that window and the right to pay by instalments is lost, so the whole year's balance falls due and a summons follows. Once the magistrates grant a liability order, Sandwell can pass the account to one of its enforcement firms, take money from wages or benefits, or use the other post-order powers. What an agent may and may not do at that point, and the national fee stages that apply, sit in our council tax bailiffs guide rather than being repeated here.
The three firms Sandwell names for council tax
Sandwell publishes the companies it instructs, and there are three: Bristow & Sutor, Rundles and Newlyn. The council does not set out which accounts go to which firm, so any of the three could be the name on your paperwork, and the firm's own letter is what tells you which. Our profiles for Bristow & Sutor, Rundles and Newlyn explain what the firm handling your case can and cannot do, and how to reach its welfare contact.
What a Sandwell summons adds to your bill
Sandwell is precise about the price of letting a case reach court. Its page states a summons adds £86 in summons costs plus £0.50 in court costs, £86.50 in total, charged when the council applies for a liability order. Sandwell's enforcement pages still quote the older agent fee figures, so treat the fee stages in our guide, not the council page, as the scale in force since May 2026. The court cost, though, is Sandwell's own and current.
How to pay Sandwell, and a special arrangement
Sandwell takes card payments on a 24-hour automated line, 0300 456 0514, and through its online account. If you cannot clear the balance at once, its Special Arrangement scheme lets you spread what you owe, and the council states that no further recovery action is taken while those payments are made as agreed. Residents on a low income can also claim Council Tax Reduction to lower the bill. If a firm already holds your account, a plan agreed with Sandwell does not by itself call off the agent, so it usually helps to tell both.
Complaints about Sandwell, and help if you're struggling
A complaint about how Sandwell handled your case goes through the council's own complaints procedure first, and can then be taken to the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman. A complaint about the conduct of Bristow & Sutor, Rundles or Newlyn, as opposed to Sandwell's decision to refer, can instead go to the firm in the first instance and to the Enforcement Conduct Board, which oversees private enforcement. Raising money worries early, ideally before a summons is issued, usually leaves the most room to agree an affordable way forward.
Frequently asked questions
Which firm does Sandwell use for council tax?
Sandwell names three enforcement companies on its own website: Bristow & Sutor, Rundles and Newlyn. It does not say which accounts go to which firm, so check the name printed on your letter against those three rather than assuming a single company.
How much does a Sandwell council tax summons cost?
Sandwell's own page states a summons adds £86 in summons costs and £0.50 in court costs, £86.50 in total. Settling or arranging the debt before the hearing can keep that charge down, so a summons is worth acting on quickly.
