How Sheffield decides whether to enforce

Sheffield's own published council tax and business rates recovery policy states the council considers vulnerability and affordability before and during enforcement, aiming its use of enforcement agents at residents who can pay but are not paying, rather than those who cannot. That does not stop a referral happening, but it is worth raising directly with Sheffield's own recovery team, before an agent visits, if your circumstances have changed.

How to pay Sheffield directly

Sheffield runs a Discretionary Housing Payment and Council Tax Hardship Scheme alongside its standard Council Tax Support scheme, for cases where the standard reduction does not go far enough. Its council tax team can be reached on 0114 273 6633, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm, or through its online "Ask us a question" service. If your case has already reached Bristow and Sutor, a plan agreed with Sheffield's own team does not automatically cancel one being pursued by the firm, so tell both.

Complaints about Sheffield, and help if you're struggling

Sheffield acknowledges a complaint within 5 working days and aims to complete its investigation within 10 working days. If you are not satisfied, a senior manager review follows, aiming to complete within a further 20 working days, and the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman is available after that. A complaint about the firm's own conduct, rather than Sheffield's recovery decision, can go to the Enforcement Conduct Board instead, which oversees the private enforcement industry.
