What happens if you don't pay West Lindsey council tax

West Lindsey follows the same national route as every council: a reminder notice, then a court summons if the reminder is missed, then a liability order from the magistrates if the summons goes unanswered. Three firms, named by West Lindsey itself

West Lindsey's own website is unusually specific about this. Its published list of enforcement agents names three companies used to collect council tax debt: Marston Holdings, Bristow and Sutor, and Newlyn plc, each with its own address and phone number. West Lindsey does not say which cases go to which firm, so any of the three could be the one on your letter. What West Lindsey says once a case is with an agent

Once an account has passed to one of the three, West Lindsey's own page states the compliance fee becomes due immediately, and if the account is not settled within 21 days a further enforcement fee applies. How to pay West Lindsey directly

West Lindsey's own council tax team can be reached by email for account queries, and its Local Council Tax Support scheme can reduce what working-age and pension-age residents owe if they are on a low income, replacing what used to be called council tax benefit. West Lindsey's own page asks residents to get in touch with the council tax team immediately if a case is already close to enforcement, rather than only once an agent has visited.

Complaints about West Lindsey, and help if you're struggling

West Lindsey handles service complaints through its general comments, compliments and complaints channel, with the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman available if you remain unhappy once that process has finished. A complaint about one of the three firms' own conduct, rather than West Lindsey's recovery decision, can go to the Enforcement Conduct Board instead, which oversees the private enforcement industry.
